A Canadian Heroes Tribute to
Hank PERRY

11) Work?

[Square in Dundee]

[English Choo Choo] When Hank wrote his mom he only told her about all the fun he had when on leave which prompted her to write back and ask him if he ever did any work! Hank recalls receiving many chocolate bars from his Aunt Martha and Mary (Hanks mother) and he would give them to the mothers of the kids hanging around the train stations. They were all so poor and he remembers that the kids only got one square of chocolate each. On one occasion as he and his friends were changing trains at Glasgow station they noticed that there was a horrible stench in the air. They asked the people at the station what it was and they learned that there were many train cars loaded with fruits and vegetables sitting at the back of the train yard. They were so busy transporting stuff for the war that they just had to leave them sit and rot.

Not all the food was rotten though. Hank particularly remembers getting fresh eggs and real Devon cream from the farms in the Devon area, where the Squadron was stationed.

Sub hunting over the North Atlantic is a tricky business, and Coastal Command pilots like Warrant Officer Hank Perry, of Calgary and Flying Officer Fred Kemper of Toronto find it helps a lot to compare notes after every patrol. Both served with the RCAF Demon Squadron overseas. This photo was taken at Limavady, Northern Ireland on March 1944.
